Membership
What is the difference between Full Membership and Basic Membership? Full Membership provides access to all of the programs and activities on the Silver Bay campus, whereas Basic membership provides limited access to only some of the campus.
Full Membership provides access to all programs and activities including: fitness center, tennis, kayaks, canoes, gymnasiums, swimming, family programs, concerts, classes, lecture series and much more. (Some programs may have an additional fee.) Full Membership is required for all on-campus accommodations. Fees for membership are included in conference rates.
Basic Membership provides access only to The Store, Library, the Gift Shop, Spiritual Life programs and hiking trails. (Other programs/activities will have an additional fee.) Any member with a current Basic Membership ($50 individual or $100 family) will be credited for the full value when they upgrade to a Full Membership or stay on campus.
What kinds of programs are available for teens? During our summer season, members in grades 7 - 12 will be invited to participate in daily weekday programs specially designed for and with them to enjoy activities on Silver Bay's campus. Daily programs will be announced in the weekly Breeze along with meeting times and locations. There is a nominal $10 daily or $30 weekly charge to cover staff and supply costs. Registration is required. A supervised summer teen center on campus available at no charge provides a teen-friendly location for just "hanging out."
Can I include my adult children on my family membership? Individuals included in a family membership follow the IRS guidelines. You may include in your family membership any qualifying children or relatives that you claim as dependents on your tax return. Adult children who do not live in your household as dependents are required to purchase their own individual or family memberships.
If I cannot afford a Silver Bay YMCA membership, can Silver Bay help me? Thanks to the generosity of the contributors to our Annual Giving Program, Silver Bay provides financial assistance for membership and program fees to those who qualify through our OPEN PATHWAYS program. You are welcome to complete a Membership Application, which can be found at the Front Desk at the Inn at Silver Bay or on our Membership Page.
Do I have to join the YMCA for a full year? Members staying on campus pay a daily membership with their accommodations. Members staying off-campus must purchase an Off-Campus Full Membership. Silver Bay Full Memberships are available on a daily, weekly, annual, and off-season basis. You can even join for a ten-day pass.
What payment options are available for paying my membership fees? Membership applications are handled at the Front Desk of the Inn at Silver Bay, online at www.silverbay.org/join, or by mailing or faxing a printable version available on the Membership Page. You may pay in full by cash, check, VISA, MasterCard or Discover.
I am a member of my hometown YMCA. Do I have to pay membership fees to Silver Bay? Individuals holding current memberships at their local YMCA receive a 25% discount on membership at Silver Bay. Written proof of membership with names of members and expiration date must be presented to receive this discount. This usually takes the form of a letter or fax from your YMCA membership director. Membership cards are not valid proof of membership status when visiting other YMCAs, as most are linked electronically to local databases and not accessible to Silver Bay. Accommodations
Why do I have to pay the minimum for cottage rentals? Cottage pricing has been restructured. The actual rental prices have been significantly reduced, and are similar to rental prices charged for cottages in the Silver Bay area. A daily full membership fee is now being charged for each person staying in a cottage rather than having the membership and program fees bundled into the cost of the cottage rental. This daily fee is equal to the same amount all other guests pay to participate in programs and activities while staying on the Silver Bay campus. The net result will be that some families will be paying less, while some might be paying slightly more. The minimum occupancy charge allows us to collect the revenue budgeted to support the maintenance and upkeep of that cottage. If your family sees a significant increase, please contact us and we will work with you to make your stay affordable.
Can I bring my pet on campus? For the safety and comfort of all members and guests, and the protection of our property and facilities, Silver Bay does not allow pets in any accommodations. People with disabilities are permitted to bring their service animals with them into any buildings on campus. There are good quality boarding kennels nearby to provide for your pet care needs.
Organization
How is Silver Bay funded? As a non-profit organization, Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks is funded by membership fees, accommodations and conference revenue, donations from the generous donors to our Annual Giving Program, and from our endowment funds.
Are all YMCAs connected? All YMCAs in America are a part of the YMCA of the USA. They all share a similar mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Each YMCA determines the best way to serve its members and build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Although they do not share financial responsibilities, each YMCA is independent.
How is a not-for-profit organization different from a for-profit business? As a not-for-profit organization, any funds that Silver Bay YMCA may surplus are utilized by Silver Bay YMCA for expanding programs and services, and enhancing the financial assistance program.
Who owns Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks? Silver Bay is a not-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of trustees that employ the Executive Director. The Executive Director in turn employs the staff of the YMCA. The board is the "owner" of the organization and sets the policies by which it operates.
May I visit other YMCAs? Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks participates in the A.W.A.Y. program (Always Welcome At YMCAs), which allows Full Members to visit other YMCAs. Please call the YMCA you are visiting to find out what privileges their A.W.A.Y program provides.
How can I get involved as a YMCA volunteer? Volunteers play a vital role at the YMCA. Program volunteers at Silver Bay serve as gardeners, boathouse aids, musicians, office workers, and many other positions. Silver Bay Council volunteers help with building, maintenance, and beautification projects on campus. Policy volunteers serve on committees and the Board of Trustees. Many more opportunities are available. Contact Carroll LaPann, Volunteer Coordinator at 518.543.8833 ext 207 or clapann@silverbay.org if you'd like to volunteer.
How can I contribute to Silver Bay? Thank you for asking. There are many ways to support Silver Bay. For more details go to our pages on Annual Giving. To make a donation, please contact Kim Pacala, Development Director, at 518.543.8833 ext 209 or kpacala@silverbay.org.
