Afterschool Programs for Elementary School Students

Our afterschool programat Ticonderoga Elementary School is more than just childcare! It is a cirriculum-rich program of activities staffed by professionals in the field of early childhood development. The afterschool program shares the YMCA's initiative to "build strong kids, strong families, strong communities." We believe that the hours after school are a time when students need to unwind from the day. The staff has designed a well-balanced and thoughtful afterschool program that will allow students to relax while participating in both individual and group activities at their own pace. Children can enjoy great activities such as arts & crafts, science, hiking, teambuilding, computer work, field trips, board games, sports, volunteer projects, and drama.

Program Goals

  • To encourage students in a positive manner by using four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • To create a safe and structured environment so students can grow socially, emotionally, and physically.
  • To build pride and a positive community by establishing a sense of ownership.
  • To offer an affordable quality afterschool program.

Afterschool Programming for Middle School Students

For students in the 21st Century Community Learning Centers After School programs in Ticonderoga, Crown Point and Moriah, this academic year has meant longer school days - and the kids have loved it!

Since September, each school district has offered academic achievement and enrichment programs for students in grades 5 through 8.  Smaller groups have provided learning opportunities for students to focus on their homework and to get extra help as needed, especially in language arts and mathematics.  Students have also had the opportunity to participate in programming that promotes greater social awareness, health and personal growth for all participants.  Most exciting for families, these three programs are free to all participants and transportation is provided to and from all after school programs.

In 2005-2006, student participation topped more than 200 participants.  Teachers have also worked hard to offer lessons that are both creative and challenging.  Programmatic highlights this year have included the production of a literary art magazine and a news show in Ticonderoga, Moriah's outreach campaign to governors in all 50 states as well as noted professional athletes, and regular family dinner nights in Crown Point.  All three programs also provide regular recreational opportunities to students including basketball, football, gymnastics, and swimming.

Recently all three programs spent a full day at Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks.  Instead of competing against one another on the sports field, nearly 75 students had the opportunity to share time at archery, the climbing wall, Frisbee golf and an afternoon session of relay races and field games.

Each program will be offering new enrichment units  for all students who will be in grades 5 through 8 in participating school districts.  If interested, please contact your area superintendent for more information.
