Good Morning America Features
Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks

Have you seen Silver Bay on Good Morning America? The story aired on September 7 on Good Morning America's Weekend Edition. If you'd like to see it, go to Good Morning America online and look for the story titled "Dirty Dancing Getaways."

How did Silver Bay get to be on Good Morning America? The ABC News show was looking to do a story on the resurgence of family-style vacations in the face of tough economic time and high gas prices. The story idea came from Lee Woodruff, a Good Morning America correspondent and wife of Bob Woodruff - the ABC World News Tonight co-anchor injured in a 2006 roadside bombing in Iraq. And a a longtime seasonal resident of Silver Bay, Lee Woodruff suggested Silver Bay be included in the story.

Courtney Chapman, a Good Morning America producer who arranged filming on campus, said Silver Bay was an ideal fit with the story.

“Destinations like Silver Bay offer meals, lodging and activities for one set price,” Chapman said. “And in the face of such a great value, families are also realizing that family-style vacations are perfect for bringing families closer together. There is something for everyone, and adults have as much opportunity to play as the kids do.”

Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks - founded in 1902 as a YMCA conference center - hosts conferences, family reunions, vacations and weddings. The 700-acre campus includes a historic Inn, numerous rental cottages, stone chapel, boathouse stocked with canoes, kayaks and sailboats, private beaches, tennis courts, a craft shop, archery facility, nature trails, and dozens of planned activities and lessons daily during the summer season.

The Good Morning America crew, headed by Chapman, was on campus on Thursday, Aug. 14. The crew followed the family of Carlos and Kathy Melo though  a sunny day of activities. The Melos visited Silver Bay this August as part of a larger family reunion with Kathy Melo’s parents – Clyde and Mary Lou Slicker, and the family of Kathy’s married sister Sue.

The crew captured daughter Isabel in children’s Silver Camp, husband Carlos in sailing lessons, wife Kathy and toddler son Gideon as they puttered around campus, the extended family at tennis and shuffleboard, and a family outing on Silver Bay’s classic 1970 launch the “Silver Spray.”

Good Morning America also visited Silver Bay’s Craft Shop and archery field with Lee Woodruff and her twin daughters Nora and Claire Woodruff.

The story featured Silver Bay and as well as Mohonk Mountain Resort, in New Paltz, New York.
